The preparation of the strategic environmental assessments for the Local Plans of Vlore, Himara, Saranda and Konispol run in parallel to the preparation of the General Local Plans for the four municipalities comprising the South Coast of Albania with a separate study prepared for each Municipality.

The environmental evaluation was based on an analysis of urban metabolism that was carried out looking into specific aspects, such as water, energy, food and waste disposal.

The Environmental Report for Konispol Municipality was prepared to assess the positive and negative impacts of the short-term and long-term conditionality on the environment and public health and consequently the General Local Plan.

Konispol is currently facing a big dilemma with regard to its future development. Despite the fact that the quality of roads in recent years has improved considerably and the average driving speed has increased, the time to arrive at the administrative center is relatively long (about 6 hours from Tirana 1 hour from Saranda) although the distances are not that significant. This has led to isolation of the area for the most part of the year, isolation which has so far preserved its characteristics and the identity of the special landscape with limited damage to the villages, leaving great opportunities for rejuvenation and sustainable development.

Agriculture development in recent years has been considerable, making the area distinct for a number of quality products. Currently in this municipality there is a great potential for a sustainable urban development with an agricultural profile intertwined with tourism. Meanwhile, the potential for agrotourism development seems to have capacities that can bring about radical improvements in local capital and the quality of life of the local population.
